The historical border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has flared up once again. The Thai army announced that it had struck a military target inside Cambodian territory using an F-16 fighter jet. According to Thai officials, 11 civilians and one soldier were killed in artillery attacks, and more than 30 people were injured.
Cambodia’s Response
Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense described the attack as an “unprovoked incursion” and accused Thailand of violating its territorial integrity. Officials said Thai jets dropped two bombs on a road.
Diplomatic Disputes
Thailand announced the expulsion of Cambodia’s ambassador. The conflict is partially attributed to landmines detonated in the border area. Thailand claims they were recently planted, while Cambodia denies the allegation.
Evacuation and Casualties
Around 40,000 people were evacuated to safe zones in the provinces of Surin, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani. Several homes, a hospital, and a gas station were damaged.
International Appeals
Malaysia and China have called for peace and expressed willingness to mediate.
Historical Background
The 817-kilometer border between the two countries has remained disputed for years. A similar armed conflict also occurred in 2011.
