British public opinion: new threats in international security

The latest analysis of social sentiment and international relations in Britain is in the spotlight, reports the More in Common analytical center. According to the results of a survey conducted in Plymouth with the participation of 2,000 people, the country’s population rates 2025 as a “chaotic” and “dangerous” period.

The majority of survey participants noted that the UK’s international authority is declining. In particular, 40% of respondents stated that the country is gradually losing its global influence. In parallel, 67% of people expressed confidence that China is gaining strength. Moreover, many believe that the US (50%) and Russia (39%) are increasing their influence on the world stage.

It is notable that respondents see China and Russia as the main enemies of their country. 65% called Russia the biggest threat to Britain. This figure is much higher than for other countries (Iran – 51%, China – 33%).

In terms of alliances, France was recognized as the closest partner in Europe. Trust in the US as an ally has also risen — up to 50%. Since April, this figure has grown by 7%.

Another important aspect is the UK’s attitude toward the conflict in Ukraine. According to the survey, 54% support the participation of British military personnel in a peacekeeping mission. However, opinions are divided about the form of aid: 24% support the supply of weapons, 17% support humanitarian assistance, 14% advocate strengthening sanctions against Russia, and 6% are in favor of accepting Ukrainian refugees.

Survey participants identified cyberattacks (24%), terrorism (15%), nuclear conflict (14%), conventional military conflict (12%), and “far-right” terrorism (7%) as the main threats to UK security.

In conclusion: the More in Common center’s study showed that British society is facing new threats and questions on the international stage. The country’s population looks to new alliances and is trying to revise its position on security. In the coming years, the direction that the UK chooses in foreign and domestic policy will be under the scrutiny of the entire world community.
