Former US President Donald Trump is planning to launch the largest construction and renovation project in the White House in the past half-century. According to official information, the total cost of the renovation amounts to $200 million. These funds will be covered by Trump’s personal contribution and several unnamed sponsors.
According to the official White House website, the main goal of the renovation is to provide the building with a new, modern, and spacious ballroom. Currently, the White House lacks a permanent space for events of such scale. That means for large celebrations, temporary outdoor tents must be set up each time.
According to the project, the new ballroom will cover more than 8,000 square meters and accommodate up to 650 guests. This is three times larger than the current East Room, which can host 200 people. White House officials emphasize that this change will provide the opportunity to host official receptions and international delegations in a proper manner.
The new structure will be built near the East Wing, which was constructed in 1902 and currently houses the offices of First Lady Melania Trump and high-ranking officials. As part of the renovation, this wing will also be modernized. According to Pravilamag, Melania Trump has already vacated her office, and the new location will be determined later.
Experienced organizations have been engaged for the construction work. The architectural firm McCrery Architects, the construction group Clark Construction, and the engineering company AECOM will carry out the project. According to the plan, work will begin in September this year.
White House representatives stated that the funds for the ballroom’s construction will be personally donated by Donald Trump and several unnamed sponsors. The absence of government funding highlights the private and political nature of this project.
