The capital of Finland, Helsinki, is known worldwide not only for its clean and well-kept environment, but also for its safe mobility policy. According to new data, not a single fatal traffic accident was recorded in the city throughout 2024, reported Politico. Interestingly, Helsinki first achieved such a high indicator in 2019. Since then, the local government has been carefully planning and consistently implementing every measure to preserve and strengthen this success.
The main goal of the city authorities is to completely eliminate road deaths through the Vision Zero policy. This is not just a slogan but a program supported by concrete plans and firm practical steps. For example, roads were significantly narrowed. This increases the sense of caution among drivers. To reduce speed, trees were planted on the roadside, acting as a psychological brake. In addition, a strict speed limit was introduced in the city center — in many areas, cars cannot go faster than 30 km/h.
Control and regulation were also not neglected. In order to accurately detect violations of traffic rules, more than 70 high-precision surveillance cameras were installed. These cameras not only expose violators but also force drivers to follow the rules. Moreover, police control was strengthened, the number of patrols increased, and their efficiency was improved.
At the same time, a convenient infrastructure was created for pedestrians and cyclists. Sidewalks were widened, and bicycle lanes were allocated separately. The public transport system was also completely revised — the number of buses, trams, and metro trips increased, and schedules became more flexible. As a result, citizens now feel less need for personal vehicles.
All these actions created a sense of safety among the population; the traffic became calmer, more peaceful, and orderly. The most important thing is that a policy which puts human life first has started to show results.
Helsinki’s success is now becoming a model for other European capitals as well. Because in many cities, traffic accidents still remain a serious issue. Many have now begun to pay attention to the Helsinki model. They are also reconsidering their roads, traffic systems, and regulation.
The Finns have once again proven to the world: if human life is truly valued, one of the key areas that must be prioritized is road safety. And if approached this way — accidents disappear.
