Samsara uses artificial intelligence to detect potholes on roads

Potholes are a major issue for both drivers and urban infrastructure. Samsara is offering a solution through its new AI system called "Ground Intelligence." By leveraging data collected over a decade from cameras mounted on trucks, the company has developed a model that automatically detects road surface defects, reports Techcrunch.com. reports .
The main advantage of the Samsara system is its much broader coverage compared to robotaxi fleets like Waymo. Cameras on millions of trucks travel the same routes regularly, tracking how potholes change over time. This data allows city authorities to address issues proactively rather than reactively.
Currently, major cities like Chicago have signed contracts to use this technology. The "Ground Intelligence" system can detect not only potholes but also other urban infrastructure defects such as graffiti, broken barriers, or hanging power lines. The system displays problem areas on a map via a special dashboard.
Samsara plans to further expand its monitoring network. The company has also introduced "Waste Intelligence" for waste management and new solutions aimed at ensuring public transport safety. These technologies serve to increase the efficiency of city services and reduce infrastructure maintenance costs.
