A new sensation has emerged on the world energy market, reported br.com. The prestigious British company BP (British Petroleum) has discovered one of the largest oil and gas fields seen in the past quarter century near the shores of Brazil. The new field, named “Boomerang,” was discovered in the Santos Basin, located in the southeast of the country, 404 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro.
According to the information, the oil and gas reserves are located beneath a salt layer in the Atlantic Ocean, and BP obtained the right to extract resources from this site during an auction in December 2022. The company’s specialists drilled a well at a depth of 5,855 meters and managed to identify major reserves across an area exceeding 300 square kilometers.
Another important aspect of the discovery is the high concentration of carbonate anhydride. This may complicate production processes and increase refining costs. Currently, BP is conducting additional laboratory studies regarding this matter and is striving to accurately determine the field’s potential.
It should be noted that “Boomerang” is already BP’s eleventh oil and gas field discovered in 2025. The company’s specialists continue to identify new fields not only in Brazil, but also in Trinidad, Egypt, the Gulf of Mexico, Libya, Namibia, and Angola.
This new discovery is significant not only for Brazil, but for the global energy market as a whole. The potential to efficiently exploit resources hidden beneath the ocean’s salt layers, combined with BP’s scientific and technical capabilities and international reputation, is expected to further strengthen the company’s position.
In the future, the company’s ongoing additional research and the use of new technologies should enable the extraction and market supply of resources from the Boomerang field. Such developments in the energy sector clearly broaden competition and prospects in the industry.
