Recent scientific research has revealed another mystery of a cosmic event that caused major changes in human history, writes plosone.org. In joint studies by Western and Russian scientists, clear traces of the comet that collided with the Earth 12,800 years ago and caused the atmosphere to cool for many years were found at the bottom of the Baffin Sea.
Scientific analyses on this issue were carried out on four geological samples taken from the deep layers at the bottom of the Baffin Sea. The team of scientists led by Professor Christopher Moore from the University of South Carolina carefully examined these samples in terms of molecular and geochemical aspects. As a result of the studies, unusually high levels of platinum, iridium, nickel, and cobalt were detected, as well as metal particles not typical for Earth. These metals do not naturally form on Earth, and their abundance indicates a cosmic origin.
According to one of the authors of the study, leading specialist of the branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Earth Physics – "Borok" Geophysical Observatory Vladimir Selmovich, such collisions have led to climate crises on Earth and even the disappearance of certain civilizations. Thus, the collision with the comet about 12,800 years ago caused a great "cosmic winter."
“Carefully studying the micro-particles found at the bottom of the Baffin Sea, by morphology and composition, we determined that they are cometary matter. The cosmic dust spread in Earth's atmosphere was enough to cause a short-term but strong cooling, that is, a global ice age began. This period lasted about 1,400 years,” says Selmovich.
Experts emphasize that this discovery once again shows how significant cosmic events are for global climate changes on Earth, for animal and plant life, and for the disappearance of ancient civilizations.
