UK concerned over China’s secret plan
The UK government has requested an explanation from China as to why some plans for the new embassy to be built in central London have been kept secret. Housing and Communities Minister, also Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner sent an official letter to the Chinese side demanding a response by August 20.

China purchased the former Royal Mint Court site in 2018 for £255 million. If approved, the project would become China’s largest embassy in Europe. It is planned to include a cultural centre and accommodation for 200 staff. However, some official blueprints have been redacted, and there is no information about the purpose of hidden rooms.

The new embassy is located very close to London’s financial district. This has raised serious concerns about espionage and security. Local residents fear the embassy’s construction could lead to protests and unrest.

Human rights activists, especially from Hong Kong, Tibet and Xinjiang, emphasize that the building could be used for political pressure and persecution. The Chinese embassy, however, claims the building aims to strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

A final decision is expected by September 9. The UK government has stated it may approve the project if certain changes are made.
