“Trump’s Nobel dream”: European states want to kill two birds with one stone

The magazine The Economist writes that Donald Trump’s strong desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize creates an opportunity for European states to use this. In particular, they may take this matter as a tool to influence his position on Ukraine.

Of course, it is almost impossible to directly influence the decisions of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. However, simply promoting Trump’s candidacy may serve as a diplomatic symbol and be regarded as a gesture to ease relations with the U.S. president and to strengthen cooperation.

Although the U.S. president does not openly say how much he wants this award, his entourage constantly emphasizes publicly Trump’s achievements in the field of peacemaking. In particular, Trump himself has claimed that he took part in resolving six major international conflicts. According to him, if he can end the Russia–Ukraine war, this could become his “road to the gates of heaven.”

Trump’s candidacy has already been supported by several states and leaders. Among them are the president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the prime minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, the prime minister of Cambodia Hun Sen, the leader of Gabon Brice Oligui Nguema, the prime minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, the government of Pakistan, and the foreign minister of Rwanda Olivier Nduhungirehe.

Now the main question is — will European leaders join this list? If they do, Trump’s chances for the Nobel will sharply increase. But whether this will become a reality or not — time will show.

For the public and political observers, the most interesting point is whether Donald Trump can reach the Nobel Prize in his political career, or whether this will remain just one of his unfulfilled dreams.
