In the Brazilian city of São Paulo, residents of the Vila Nova neighborhood lived for many years under the threat of relocation. In 2006, the government declared this area an environmental protection zone and planned to resettle hundreds of families.
However, the local residents opposed this. On the initiative of a woman named Lia Esperança, the community cleaned up the waste and created a large garden. This garden became not only a place for growing vegetables and fruits but also a space for uniting the community.
Now the neighborhood residents grow their own food here and also earn extra income. In addition, vocational courses for women, a kitchen, and a small library were established.
Thanks to the garden, the Vila Nova Esperança project became recognized throughout Brazil and won awards. Therefore, the government also brought services such as water, electricity, and roads to this area.
Nevertheless, the threat of relocation still exists for some families. But the residents are trying to preserve their homes through the garden. “It was not me alone, it was the strength of the whole community,” says Lia Esperança.
