In St. Petersburg, Russia, special cameras capable of determining people's ethnic origin have been launched. This was reported by Igor Nikонов, the Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Information Technology. According to him, this technology allows for identifying people's ethnic backgrounds and tracking their concentrations in different areas of the city.
New Opportunities for Coordinating Normative Acts and Events
According to Nikонов, the system is capable of identifying six different ethnic groups, and based on the analysis of their concentrations, law enforcement agencies will make relevant decisions to maintain public order. Oleg Kapitanov, head of the Committee for Interethnic Relations, called this system a "statistical analysis tool," which will help improve security at public events.
Comparison of Personal Data and Expanded Surveillance Capabilities
By 2025, it is planned to equip 8,000 city cameras in St. Petersburg with the function of determining ethnic affiliation. Additionally, a project is being considered to compare the personal data, photographs, and residency permits of foreign citizens. As a result, surveillance cameras have already helped solve over 700 crimes in the city.
How Will This Work in Real Life?
Undoubtedly, this technology may play an important role in ensuring safety at public events, preventing crimes, and maintaining public order. However, debates continue regarding the impact of this system on people's private lives. It will be interesting to see how this system affects relations between different ethnic groups and how it influences the process of integration in society.
