A landslide occurred in the Marra Mountains in Sudan’s western Darfur region after heavy rains. According to the Sudan Liberation Army, at least 1,000 people were killed in the incident. The village of Tarasin was completely destroyed, with only one survivor.
People are in a dire situation because of the landslide. The armed group appealed to the UN and international organizations for urgent assistance. Many residents had already fled to the Marra Mountains seeking refuge after being displaced by the war.
Darfur’s governor, Minni Minnawi, called the incident a “great tragedy.” He urged the international community to provide aid, stressing that the people cannot overcome this disaster alone.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a civil war that has brought the country to the brink of famine. According to some sources, up to 150,000 people have been killed since the conflict began, and 12 million have been forced to flee their homes.
