President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping made a proposal to build a joint base on the Moon at the 25th meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. This was reported by the Russian publication RBK.
Xi Jinping emphasized that Beijing calls on SCO member states to actively participate in the program being implemented in cooperation with Russia. This initiative is aimed at strengthening regional and global space cooperation.
Within the framework of the current project, the construction of the International Scientific Moon Station (ILRS) is planned. This station will be implemented as a joint scientific project between the Roscosmos Agency of Russia and the National Space Administration of China. The construction of the facility is planned to be fully completed between 2031-2035.
Wu Yanhua, head of China's long-range space exploration program, stated that the base will allow scientific research to be conducted within a radius of 100 kilometers from the Moon's south pole by 2035. This opens up new possibilities for studying geological and cosmic processes on the Moon.
For information, the idea of building an international scientific station on the Moon first appeared in 2021. Within the framework of the project, a facility at the Moon's South Pole will be prepared for large-scale research within a radius of 100 km. This step is considered an important scientific achievement for the international space community.
