Thousands of people in the U.S. capital, Washington, protested against President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops onto the city’s streets. Demonstrators called the soldiers “occupiers” and marched with slogans such as “Trump must go.”
Last month, Trump ordered the deployment of troops to reduce crime in the capital. He also placed the local police under federal control and involved the immigration service. However, according to official data, the city’s crime rate had already fallen to its lowest level in 30 years.
Washington’s Attorney General called Trump’s decision unconstitutional and filed a lawsuit. Nevertheless, some residents said the troops were necessary for security. The city’s mayor admitted federal forces had helped, but expressed hope the guard would leave soon.
Currently, thousands of soldiers are patrolling the streets of the capital. Their mission may continue until the end of November.
