The Latvian government has begun implementing new measures for the country's security. On September 11, from 18:00 local time, the airspace along the eastern border belonging to the Russian and Belarusian sides was temporarily closed. This restriction will remain in effect until at least September 18.
According to local media, the decision was made at the initiative of Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds. He emphasized that there is currently no direct threat from Russia, but the situation with the illegal entry of drones into Polish airspace prompted the adoption of these preventive measures.
At the same time, the Latvian Parliament - the Saeima - is also discussing an important issue. That is, in connection with the large-scale joint military exercises "West-2025" in the territories of Russia and Belarus, the issue of completely closing the borders with these two countries has been put on the agenda.
Experts emphasize that Latvia's decisions are closely linked to NATO's security policy in Eastern Europe. Especially at a time when tension in the region and conflicts related to drones are escalating, closing airspace is being taken as a precautionary measure.
Latvian officials emphasize that these measures are only temporary and that the airspace will reopen once the country's security is guaranteed.
