Typhoon fighter jets belonging to the UK Royal Air Force are participating in the Polish airspace protection mission as part of an important NATO operation called "Eastern Guardian." Their main task is to counter Russian air threats, including unmanned aerial vehicles. This was announced in an official statement released by the UK government on Monday, September 15th.
The statement emphasized that the British Royal Air Force will cooperate with the German, Danish, and French air forces to strengthen NATO's eastern flank. This step was announced following "accidental and dangerous violation of Polish sovereign airspace by Russian drones" and similar incidents recorded in Romanian airspace on September 13. NATO considers these incidents one of the most serious in terms of airspace violations.
It was reported that British Typhoon fighters will be deployed at the Koningsby military base in Lincolnshire and will begin patrol flights over Polish air in the coming days. They are serviced by Voyager refueling aircraft and special logistics teams from the Brise-Norton airbase in Oxfordshire.
This mission is seen as an important step towards ensuring the security of the airspace not only of Poland, but of NATO as a whole, eliminating potential threats from Russia, and further strengthening cooperation between allies.
