An unusual tactic was used during large-scale drone attacks targeting Russian territories by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the night of Tuesday, September 23rd. RBK news agency, citing sources close to the Russian Ministry of Defense and familiar with the nature of the attack, reported that this time, along with drones, a large number of hot air balloons were used.
One source told reporters: "There were indeed many balloons, but their movements were not very precise." He noted that such a large-scale use of balloons during drone attacks is unprecedented.
At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defense did not provide any information about the balloons in its official statement. According to the Ministry's Telegram messages, 69 Ukrainian drones were destroyed in one night. According to the official report, they were shot down from midnight to 7:00 a.m. Moscow time in the Belgorod, Bryansk, Kaluga, and Kursk regions, the Moscow region, as well as in the Rostov, Ryazan, Samara, and Saratov regions, and the annexed Crimea.
A dangerous situation was also observed around Moscow. According to reports, more than 40 drones approached the capital. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin repeatedly reported to the public on the actions of air defense units during the events and announced that security measures in the sky over the capital have been strengthened.
Thus, the new tactical approach used by the Ukrainian side - the mass use of balloons - indicates an even more complicated nature of air clashes in the Russia-Ukraine war. This, according to experts, makes it even more difficult to predict and prevent attacks.
