Scientists discovered 11-million-year-old asteroid traces

Researchers at Curtin University in Australia have made an unexpected discovery. They found traces of an asteroid impact previously unknown, according to Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

During the study, scientists analyzed tektites — a type of natural glass formed when celestial bodies collide with Earth. According to experts, the museum sample has a unique composition and is estimated to have originated about 11 million years ago.

Comparative analysis showed that the newly found tektites are almost 15 times older than those previously studied. This suggests that they may be linked to an entirely different cosmic event that had not been recorded before.

Nevertheless, despite the probable scale of the impact, scientists have so far been unable to identify the asteroid’s impact crater.
