The 23rd President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to five years in prison. This was reported by Le Monde.
This case is related to Sarkozy's 2007 presidential election. According to the investigation, his associates conspired with the Libyan government to finance the election campaign. The sum is said to have reached 50 million euros.
Sarkozy himself admitted this, but the main accusations - corruption and illegal financing from Muammar Gaddafi's funds - have been partially dropped.
During the trial, his closest associates, former ministers Claude Gayan and Bris Hortefeu, were also found guilty. At the same time, Sarkozy denied his guilt and stated that the case was initiated for political reasons.
If an appeal is filed against the verdict, its execution may be delayed by several months or years.
Suspicions about Libyan funds first appeared in 2011. Gaddafi himself stated that millions of euros had been allocated to support Sarkozy.
This is Sarkozy's third verdict. In 2024, he was found guilty of corruption and influence, and also sentenced to one year in prison in the Bigmalion case of 2012.
