A 19-year-old student from the University of Missouri (USA) was exposed through his conversation with artificial intelligence. According to The Smoking Gun, the main piece of evidence in court was his chat with ChatGPT — investigators treated it as a confession.
Reports say the student committed vandalism on the university campus: he damaged 17 cars, broke their windows, and dented body parts. Surveillance cameras captured him at the scene, but the decisive evidence came from his ChatGPT messages.
After the incident, he asked the chatbot, “Will I go to jail?” and wrote, “I smashed those stupid cars.”
He was charged with intentional property damage and placed in the Greene County Jail. The court may release him on a $7,500 bond.
The publication notes that in the United States, investigators obtain chat records with the suspect’s consent. In Germany, however, this can only be done with court approval. Moreover, according to rulings of the Bremen Higher Regional Court, in some cases, police may forcibly unlock a suspect’s phone using their fingerprint.
