On October 9, a jury in the state of Virginia made a new sensational decision in the U.S. political arena. New York Attorney General Letitia James, one of President Donald Trump’s main rivals, was accused of bank fraud, local media reported.
According to reports, James was investigated for allegedly providing false information in 2020 to secure favorable loan terms when purchasing a property in Virginia.
Interestingly, similar charges had previously been filed against another Trump critic — former FBI Director James Comey.
Both cases are being led by prosecutor Lindsey Halligan, who was appointed by Donald Trump. Her predecessor resigned earlier, stating there was insufficient evidence to prosecute James and Comey.
Responding to the allegations, Letitia James denied all accusations, calling them “pure political revenge.”
“Trump is acting out of personal interest and a spirit of retaliation,” James said during a press briefing.
In September, Trump criticized James, Comey, and Democratic Senator Adam Schiff on social media, claiming “investigations against them haven’t even begun.” Soon after, the U.S. Department of Justice officially charged Comey and opened investigations into Schiff and James.
Trump’s close ally, Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Palt, also accused them of document forgery but failed to provide evidence.
Analysts believe this case could mark a new phase in the political struggle within the United States. On one side — the president’s opponents accused of crimes, and on the other — Trump preparing for political revenge.
For now, Letitia James intends to dismiss the case in court and prove her innocence.
