The Bulgarian government has reacted to the possibility of Russian President Vladimir Putin flying to Budapest to meet with US President Donald Trump, reports bnr.bg. Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev stated that Sofia is ready to support any initiative that serves peace negotiations.
"If efforts are being made to achieve peace and a meeting is necessary for this, organizing it through all means is the most correct way," Georgiev said in an interview with Bulgarian National Radio.
To the journalist's question, "Does this mean Putin will be allowed to fly by Bulgarian air?" the minister responded thoughtfully:
"If one of the participants cannot come, how will the meeting be held?" he said.
Recall that on October 16, Donald Trump held a two-hour telephone conversation with the Russian president. Following the conversation, Trump announced his intention to hold a face-to-face meeting with Putin in Budapest.
Meanwhile, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security, Kaya Kallas, assessed this possibility as an "unpleasant signal." According to him, "It's unpleasant to see a person subject to an international criminal court order arriving in Europe."
However, Kallas added that "if this meeting can really trigger peace talks, then its political significance cannot be denied."
Thus, this declaration of Bulgaria aroused great interest in the European political arena. Some analysts assess Sofia's approach as pragmatic and diplomatic, that is, Bulgaria intends not to worsen relations with Moscow, but at the same time not to enter into conflict with the policy of the European Union.
The upcoming Budapest summit between Putin and Trump is still without a specific date, but according to diplomatic sources, the meeting may take place in the coming weeks.
