The US is losing workers in the nuclear industry due to the budget crisis

As a result of the partial suspension of the federal government in the USA, about 1,400 employees of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) were dismissed. Energy Minister Chris Wright announced this at a press conference in Nevada.

According to the minister, the reductions will cover 80% of the agency's total staff. This directly affects the processes of preservation and modernization of the American nuclear arsenal.

"This is unprecedented," said Chris Wright.

The Department of Energy is currently maintaining jobs for about 100,000 contract workers. But if the budget crisis continues, these specialists may also lose their jobs.

Wright emphasized that this could pose a threat to tens of thousands of people and their families, as well as national security.

Why did this happen?

From October 1, the activities of federal agencies were partially suspended due to the failure of the US Congress to approve the budget. This was caused by disagreements between the parties - Republicans and Democrats - in particular, differences of opinion on healthcare and social spending.

According to US law, only services necessary for life and safety will continue to operate during the closure period. However, wages will be paid later, after the budget issues are resolved.

Such government closures in the US are not new: more than 20 such cases have occurred since 1977. The longest duration was in 2018-2019, lasting 35 days.
