In Iceland, mosquitoes were recorded for the first time. The Guardian reported this, citing information from local scientists.
According to the data, three mosquitoes found in the southwestern region of the country belong to the Culiseta annulata species and are considered resistant to cold climates. Experts note that this type of mosquito can survive in winter by hiding in basements and warehouses.
Until now, Iceland was known as the only area outside Antarctica where mosquitoes do not live permanently. Scientists consider the emergence of insects a consequence of global climate change.
According to climatologists, Iceland has become one of the regions warming up faster than other countries in the Northern Hemisphere.
