In Tajikistan, school teachers are now exempt from military service.
This decision is being implemented through amendments to the Law “On Military Duty and Military Service.” Previously, this privilege applied only to teachers working in rural schools. Now it extends to all teachers, regardless of their place of work.
The amendments were approved by the lower house of parliament, the Majlisi Namoyandagon, and are now awaiting confirmation by the upper house, the Majlisi Milli, and the president’s signature. According to the Ministry of Education and Science, the draft law was developed to raise the status of teachers and reduce the shortage of school staff.
Deputy Minister Khomid Khoshimzoda stated that these changes are related to the “Law on the Status of Teachers” and are aimed at strengthening the legal and social protection of educators.
In recent years, the shortage of teachers in Tajik schools has remained a serious issue. According to official data, the country lacks more than 3,800 teachers. Meanwhile, over 13,000 students have received teaching diplomas this year.
The new draft law prohibits forcing teachers to participate in cleaning activities or money collections. It also protects them from insults and pressure. The document provides social guarantees for teachers — including the allocation of land plots, housing, and measures to enhance their professional prestige.
Experts note that these changes will not only ease the shortage of qualified teachers but also strengthen the social status and respect for the teaching profession.
