The European Commission expects to begin formal accession negotiations with Ukraine by the end of this year. This was stated in the latest report on the achievements of candidate countries.
According to the document, Kyiv has met the necessary conditions to open three out of six negotiation chapters. Brussels officials hope that Ukraine will quickly complete work on the remaining areas, which would allow the EU Council to open all chapters for negotiations by the end of the year.
Ukraine and Moldova were granted candidate status in June 2022, and official negotiations are planned to begin in June 2024. These meetings have been organized by Belgium, taking place before the country hands over the EU presidency to Hungary, which is seen as having a more cautious position.
Despite the positive developments, some experts express doubts about the possibility of admitting Ukraine to the European Union within its current territorial borders. At the same time, the European Commission's report emphasizes that Kyiv needs to accelerate reforms, especially in ensuring the rule of law.
The process of joining the European Union is considered very long and complex. For example, Croatia, which is so far the last country to join (in 2013), conducted bilateral negotiations for almost eight years.
