A large part of the Didal glacier, located in the Tajikabad district of Tajikistan, has broken away and moved approximately 5 kilometers down the mountain. This was reported by the country's Hydrometeorological Agency.
According to the data, the separated ice fragment was 1.5 kilometers long, 200 meters wide, and up to 50 meters high. Experts attribute this process to the increase in air temperature in recent weeks.
Scientists note that the glacier is still in an unstable state, which increases the risk of landslides and mudflows in nearby areas.
As a reminder, mountains make up almost 93% of Tajikistan's territory. About 14 thousand glaciers in the country are an important source of water resources for Central Asia. Therefore, changes occurring in large glaciers, such as Didal, can have a direct impact on the environmental sustainability of the entire region.
