New attacks on energy networks in Russia's Vologda and Volgograd regions in recent days have caused serious concern among residents and officials. According to official data, the attacks were mainly directed at the country's major power supply centers.
It was reported that a large substation called "Belozerskaya" in the Vologda region was attacked. The capacity of this facility is 3 gigavolt-amperes, and it provides electricity to Vologda, Cherepovets, and a number of large industrial enterprises. It is reported that the power supply was cut off in some districts for several hours after the attack.
In the Volgograd region, the situation became even more tense. Here, the Balashovskaya LEP substation with a capacity of 1523 megavolt-amperes became the target of the attack. According to reports, this is the second time the object has been hit in the last month.
According to the governor of the Volgograd region, Andrey Bocharov, construction and repair brigades are currently working to restore electricity supply in the Kikvidzen, Uryupin, Novonikolaev, and Novoannin districts.
"Currently, the main focus is on the rapid supply of energy to populated areas. All services are working continuously," the governor wrote on his Telegram page.
It is assumed that these attacks on energy systems were carried out by Ukraine. In recent weeks, Kyiv has also not hidden the fact that in response to continuous Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities, it has intensified attacks on infrastructure in the Moscow region.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the country plans to increase its defense capabilities and expand the geography of strikes against Russian strategic targets using Ukrainian-made missiles. However, there is no precise information about whether missiles were used in this attack.
In the city of Saratov, several buildings and cars were also damaged as a result of the drone attack. According to Governor Roman Busargin, two people sustained moderate injuries during the incident.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that 82 Ukrainian drones were destroyed over seven regions of the country on the morning of November 7. However, the Vologda region is not mentioned in this list. Therefore, it has not yet been determined how many drones reached the target or which objects were hit.
According to experts, the latest energy attacks in Russia remain one of the main strategic risks on the eve of the winter season. Any interruption in energy supply can have a serious impact not only on the lives of the population, but also on industrial activity.
It was reported that government agencies and security services are currently strengthening measures to protect energy infrastructure. At the same time, the introduction of new technologies against possible attacks is expected to make the Russian energy system more stable.
