Athlete jailed for acrobatic stunt without hijab

In Iran, female sports coach Hania Shariati Rudposhti was arrested for performing acrobatic movements in public without a headscarf, Iran International reported.
According to reports, she was detained for violating the law on mandatory hijab. The Norway-based human rights organization “Hengaw” stated that the athlete was arrested on the evening of November 9 and was allowed only one short phone call with her family.
Shariati’s current whereabouts remain unknown. At the same time, her social media accounts — including her Instagram page with more than 160,000 followers — have been taken under control by Iran’s security service.
In recent weeks, Iranian officials have demanded stricter adherence to dress-code regulations in public places. Attorney General Mohammad Movahedi Azad reminded that following Islamic dress standards is a religious duty for every woman and emphasized that prosecutors must take firm action against behavior contrary to these norms.
Although the issue of the hijab has long been a matter of controversy in Iran, Hania Shariati’s case has once again reignited debates over women’s freedom in the country.
