Compensation for slavery is being demanded from Britain. According to Reuters, a number of Caribbean and African countries are demanding official and financial accountability from the UK for the consequences of slavery and colonialism.
According to reports, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states are sending a special delegation to London to discuss reparations. The Commission will meet with members of the UK government and parliament to discuss in detail the severe historical injustices of the era of slavery and their socio-economic consequences that persist to this day.
The reparation plan CARICOM intends to provide includes several requirements, such as "full and formal apologies, expansion of educational programs, cancellation of a number of public debts, and allocation of financial compensation." Several African Union member states are also working on a similar program - they are demanding compensation for the European slave trade of the 15th-19th centuries. It is noted that during that period, more than 12.5 million Africans were forcibly taken away and sold as slaves.
At the same time, the publication writes that resistance to the issue of reparations is growing in the world. Many European leaders are not in a hurry to make official comments on this issue, emphasizing that modern states cannot be fully responsible for past mistakes.
A 2025 survey commissioned by The Repair Campaign showed an interesting result: 85% of Britons were unaware that the country had forcibly relocated more than three million Africans to the Caribbean.
