Sharp Turn in Ukrainian Politics
Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, resigned on Friday following a search of his home conducted by the anti-corruption agency, and announced his intention to go to the battlefield. His letter regarding this was published by “NYP”.
Explaining his decision, Yermak wrote: “I am going to the front and am ready for any consequences. I am an honest and conscientious person.” He stressed that the search damaged his reputation and left him defenseless. “My dignity was not protected, even though I have been in Kyiv since February 24, 2022. The slanders being woven against me angered me, but the lack of support from those who know the truth angers me even more. I do not want to cause problems for Zelensky,” he said.
The 100 Million Dollar Scandal
The raid was conducted as part of the 15-month investigation known as “Operation Midas”. Investigators stated that a large scheme was uncovered where contractors working with Energoatom were allegedly demanded bribes of 10–15 percent, resulting in the "theft" of approximately 100 million dollars. Although Yermak himself was not charged, his resignation occurred just before the most important stage of the Ukraine–US peace negotiations and indicates increased internal political pressure.
President Zelensky supported the resignation, emphasizing that the decision was made to eliminate any rumors. Yermak did not say when or how he would go to the front. Yermak concluded his letter with: “Maybe we’ll meet again. Glory to Ukraine!”
