Secret Negotiations in Florida: Core Issues Remain Open
The US-Ukraine negotiations held in Florida State have concluded. According to the Wall Street Journal, citing a source in the US administration, important issues regarding the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict remained unresolved. First and foremost, the parties were unable to reach an agreement on future security guarantees for Kyiv, including the potential format of obligations from Washington and its allies.
Tense Disputes and Difficult Decisions
Participants characterized the five-hour discussions as "difficult and tense," but "productive." Informed sources claim that the negotiations took place under severe pressure, and serious demands were put on Kyiv.
The discussion prominently featured the issue of potential territorial agreements between Kyiv and Moscow, including defining the de-facto post-war border with Russia within a peace settlement framework. The most complex and crucial issue remained the uncertainty associated with the international recognition of the regions annexed by Russia.
Trump's Optimism: «Real Opportunity»
The negotiations concluded at the Shell Bay private resort belonging to US Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. High-ranking Washington officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Presidential Advisor Jared Kushner, participated in the meeting.
Against the backdrop of these reports, US President Donald Trump, in turn, told reporters that the dialogue on peacefully resolving the issue with Kyiv was going well. He said he saw a "real opportunity" to reach an agreement and stressed that the participants of the Florida meeting had achieved a practical consensus, contradicting the reports from official publications.
Rubio: Not Limited to Ceasefire
Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the parties did not limit the negotiations solely to the discussion of halting military operations. According to him, the foundation for future agreements had already been laid in Geneva during the previous round, but the current talks allowed for further progress on the agreed-upon issues. The list of discussed issues also included the schedule for elections in Ukraine and territorial exchanges.
