Rahmonullo L. in court: serious accusations
Afghan citizen Rahmanullo L., suspected of shooting at US National Guard troops, testified in court. The accused, wounded during the arrest, participated in the court hearing online from the hospital. During a hearing in Washington, D.C., her lawyer made a statement on behalf of her client, denying guilt on such serious charges as assault and first-degree premeditated murder. The defense attorney insisted that the defendant had no prior convictions and requested his release from custody.
Attacks and casualties
The tragedy occurred on November 26 in Farragut Square, not far from the White House. Rahmonullo L. suddenly opened fire on the servicemen. As a result, 20-year-old serviceman Sara Bextram was seriously injured and later died in the hospital. Doctors are fighting for the life of another National Guard soldier, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe.
The suspect entered the US from Afghanistan in 2021. He cooperated with American intelligence agencies in his homeland, so he gained the right to move when the Taliban came to power. Interestingly, he applied for asylum in 2024 and received it in early 2025 after Trump's second inauguration.
Trump's sharp reaction and visas suspended
White House leader Donald Trump called the attack "terrible" and ordered a thorough re-examination of all foreign citizens who entered Afghanistan under Joe Biden. The president said that "all necessary measures will be taken to deport any foreign person who should not be here."
In response to the shooting, the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) temporarily suspended the consideration of all asylum applications. USCIS chief Joseph Edlow stated that the restrictions will remain in effect "until the possibility of conducting the most thorough examination of each foreign person is ensured." The US State Department also announced the suspension of visa issuance to Afghan citizens.
