Major central banks cut interest rates to record levels in 2025

In 2025, the world’s main central banks significantly lowered interest rates. The United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom, along with banks in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, Norway, and Switzerland, also reduced rates. This year, a total of 32 cuts were made – the largest in the past ten years.

This change is different from the rate increases in 2022 and 2023. Back then, rates were raised to stabilize prices as energy costs rose. In Japan, rates were increased twice. Experts say some banks may raise rates again in 2026.

In developing countries, rate cuts happened even faster. Banks in Turkey, Russia, India, Mexico, Thailand, the Philippines, Poland, and Chile reduced rates by a total of 3,085 points during the year. This is much higher than in 2024 and the largest reduction in recent years.

Experts note that inflation is under control in most countries. At the same time, some developing countries slightly increased rates, but they may lower them again in the future.
