Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen called on US President Donald Trump to abandon his firm stance on the Greenland issue. He emphasized that any pressure or attempted use of force against the island is considered an attack on the Kingdom of Denmark. This was reported by Bloomberg.
According to Rasmussen, the Danish government will never comply with US demands aimed at transferring or controlling Greenland. In this regard, he summoned the US ambassador to Denmark to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to formally explain the Trump administration's position.
"An attack on any part of the kingdom is considered an attack on the entire kingdom," the minister said in an interview with the local TV2 channel. He also emphasized that the territory of Greenland is protected within the framework of the NATO security system.
The Greenland government also openly expressed its position on this issue. The island's Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, categorically denied any possibility of granting Greenland to the US.
"Grenland belongs to the Greenlanders. The territorial integrity of the island must be respected," he wrote on his Facebook page. Nielsen also did not hide the fact that the claims made by the US are causing serious concern among the Greenlanders.
As a reminder, on December 22nd, Donald Trump announced the appointment of Republican Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as Special Envoy for Greenland. Landry expressed gratitude for this decision and openly confirmed the US's intention to purchase the island.
Later, Trump said that Greenland is important to the US not for natural resources, but from the point of view of national security. However, even these comments did not soften the attitude of the leaders of Greenland and Denmark. Jens-Frederik Nielsen expressed deep regret for the US desire to seize the island and called for adherence to the principles of international law and sovereignty.
For now, the issue is being discussed in diplomatic circles, but the sharp statements made by Denmark clearly show that Copenhagen will not back down on the Greenland issue.
