Pope Francis Calls for Peaceful Dialogue Between Russia and Ukraine

Call from the Pope: Russia and Ukraine urged to engage in peaceful dialogue

Pope Lev XIV has called on Russia and Ukraine to engage in negotiations to end the war. This appeal was made during his traditional Christmas Urbi et Orbi — “To the City and the World” address on Thursday, December 25, at the Vatican.

In his speech, the Pontiff emphasized that he is praying for the suffering people of Ukraine and underscored the urgent need to cease the use of weapons. According to him, with the support of the international community, the conflicting parties must find the courage to embark on a sincere, open, and mutually respectful dialogue.

— We pray for the suffering people of Ukraine. Let the weapons fall silent, let the word of peace be heard, — the Pope stated.

Address at the Vatican

Lev XIV delivered the address from the balcony of the Vatican basilica. Hundreds of people gathered in the square listened intently to his speech. The text of the address was later officially released by the Vatican’s press office.

The Middle East and other regions

Turning his attention to other conflict zones around the world, the Pontiff expressed support for Christians in the Middle East. He extended wishes for justice, peace, and stability in Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, and Syria.

The Pope also remembered people suffering in various corners of the world. He highlighted the humanitarian crises in Sudan, South Sudan, Mali, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Myanmar, Thailand, and Cambodia.

Calls to cease hostilities

It is worth noting that on December 23, the Pope had also urged the Russian army to cease hostilities. At that time, he openly expressed his deep concern over Russia’s rejection of the appeal.

Meanwhile, military operations continued. On December 25, nighttime strikes resulted in the deaths of at least four people and injuries to 19 others of varying severity across several regions of Ukraine.

Conclusion

The Pope’s address once again drew the world’s attention to the tragic war in Ukraine. His words are not a political statement but a moral appeal to humanity: dialogue instead of weapons; peace instead of hatred.
