Why are scotch and sphinx cats banned in the Netherlands?

In the Netherlands, the breeding, sale, and import of Scottish Fold (Scottish) and hairless cats (sphinx) are prohibited, The Nation reports. The decision was explained by serious genetic problems hidden behind the appearance of these breeds. It is noted that these measures are part of a broader policy aimed at improving the well-being of animals.

Specialists note that the curved shape of Scottish cats' ears is associated with a genetic mutation, which causes defects in cartilage and joints. As a result, arthritis, constant pain, and problems with the tail and spine can occur. In hairless cats like sphinxes, the absence of fur makes it difficult to maintain normal body temperature and increases the risk of skin diseases and infections.

The decision was supported by the Association of Veterinarians of the Netherlands and the European Association of Veterinarians. Moreover, it is strictly forbidden to put these breeds of cats in competitions and exhibitions, no exceptions are provided. Violators are fined 1,500 euros (approximately 19.5-21 million soums, depending on the exchange rate), and chipped cats can remain in their owner's care for the rest of their lives.
