The first clinical trials of the vaccine against the Nipax virus, developed by scientists from the University of Tokyo in Belgium, are expected to begin. According to the report, the tests at this stage will be conducted with the participation of people, Nikkei reported.
It was reported that the vaccine showed 100% effectiveness in experiments conducted on primates. Now the most important step is checking safety and effectiveness in the human body.
Scientists also plan to expand the geography of research in the future: at the next stage, additional trials with the participation of adults and children may be conducted in Bangladesh.
It should be recalled that earlier reports had emerged about the spread of the Nipah virus near the Indian city of Calcutta. It is also noted that this virus can be transmitted from animals, through contaminated food, or from person to person.
According to the World Health Organization, the mortality rate from infection with the Nipah virus can reach from 40% to 75% - depending on the quality of epidemic control and the capabilities of the local medical system.
In short, the situation doesn't mean "everything is settled," but the start of clinical trials is a big step. If the results are positive, a strong "shield" may appear in the fight against Nipah.
