Why is there a sharp decline in the German asylum system?

In the first quarter of 2026, a significant decrease in asylum applications was recorded in Germany. According to information cited in a confidential report by the European Commission, the country has lost its status as the most requested state in the European Union.

According to statistics, 28,922 new asylum applications were registered in Germany during this period, representing a decrease of nearly 23% compared to the previous year.

As a result, Germany dropped to fourth place in the ranking for the first time since 2015. Currently, France, Spain, and Italy occupy the preceding positions.

Experts explain this change mainly by the decrease in the number of applicants from Syria and Ukraine.
