Surgeon removes patient's liver instead of spleen

A Florida surgeon who caused a patient's death by removing his liver instead of his spleen in the United States has come up with a flimsy excuse. This was reported by the New York Post.

44-year-old Thomas Shaknovsky is on trial for the incident that occurred in August 2024. The doctor operated on 70-year-old William Bryan, removed his healthy liver, declared the procedure a success, and left the operating room. The elderly patient began to bleed severely, and Shaknovsky's colleagues were unable to save him. In April, the former surgeon was charged with medical negligence resulting in the patient's death.

As part of the trial, Shaknovsky's deposition given to the lawyers of Bryan's widow in November 2025 was released. The doctor justified his actions by claiming the surgery was very difficult, the patient had abdominal bleeding, and it was impossible to locate the source of the bleeding due to an enlarged colon. "I couldn't tell the difference and was very upset," Shaknovsky explained regarding the removal of the healthy organ.
