Electric cars are usually promoted as an environmentally friendly type of transport that does not harm nature. However, a new study conducted by researchers at the University of California has raised serious doubts about this view. They revealed the unexpected danger of electric vehicle charging stations.
During experiments in Los Angeles, specialists analyzed the air quality around 50 Tesla Supercharger stations. The results were unexpected: near charging points, the amount of fine particles dangerous to human health was found to be twice as high.
Calculations showed that around such stations, the level of harmful particles in the air could reach 15–20 micrograms per cubic meter. For comparison: near fuel stations for internal combustion engine cars, this figure was 12 micrograms per cubic meter.
According to scientists, the main reason for this situation is dust, small fragments of tires, and sand particles located near charging stations. In their opinion, although electric cars themselves do not emit gases into the atmosphere, the infrastructure of their use may pose a certain health risk.
