Russia has tightened the rules for recognizing foreign driver's licenses. State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said that now certificates from countries where only Russian has the status of a state language will be directly valid in Russia.
For now, drivers from Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan can move freely with their national passes.
Among other countries, citizens of Uzbekistan are also required to take an exam and obtain a Russian-style license to drive a car in Russia.
Volodin explained this decision by citing Russian language proficiency as the main criterion. He cited the draft law on citizens of Armenia as an example - it was rejected because the Russian language does not have official status in Armenia.
Therefore, drivers from Uzbekistan operating in Russia are required to update their documents.
