Tesla Model Y becomes the first car to pass new US safety tests

Tesla Model Y has become the first vehicle to meet the new safety requirements introduced by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The updated standards include four mandatory tests that evaluate the effectiveness of automatic emergency braking for pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, and lane-keeping functions. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports .

For now, the Model Y results are based on data provided by Tesla itself, as manufacturers are allowed to self-certify initial data for the 2026 model year. However, the NHTSA will re-verify these metrics in its own independent laboratories in the future. If the vehicle fails to meet the specified requirements, its compliance status will be revoked.

This development is part of the NCAP program, which expands upon traditional five-star safety ratings. While automakers previously marketed their assistance systems in various ways, the NHTSA has now begun evaluating these functions based on a unified government standard.

Starting with the 2027 model year, the NHTSA plans to transition to fully independent testing of ADAS systems. This step serves to increase transparency in automotive safety technology and foster competition based on verified safety levels rather than just features.
