A surprising announcement for fans of the popular “Shrek” characters: DreamWorks has revealed that a standalone film about Donkey is in development. This project is being launched alongside “Shrek 5”. Eddie Murphy, who has voiced Donkey for many years, officially confirmed the news and said filming will begin this fall, Peopletalk reported.
According to the actor, “Shrek 5” is still in the process of voice recording and animation, while shooting for the Donkey film is scheduled to start in September. The release is expected around 2027.
Donkey is one of the most vibrant, humorous, and talkative characters in the “Shrek” universe. He is loved not only for his jokes but also for his sincerity, loyalty, and positivity in difficult situations. In the new film, he will appear not just as a friend, but also as a family man — married to a dragon and with children. Murphy said the script is very entertaining and full of surprises.
As you may recall, Puss in Boots also received his own films — the latest, “The Last Wish,” was praised by both critics and audiences. That’s why the upcoming Donkey film is expected to be another major hit.
Viewers are already discussing the animation style of the upcoming film. After mixed reactions to “Shrek 5’s” animation, the studio may take audience feedback into account this time. A story based on Donkey’s life and family carries great potential.
It’s worth noting that “Shrek 5” is scheduled for release on December 23, 2026, marking the 25th anniversary of DreamWorks Animation. The original voice cast — Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy — will return as Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey. Actress Zendaya will voice Shrek’s daughter.
The first “Shrek” movie was released in 2001, based on William Steig’s children’s book. The sequels followed in 2004, 2007, and 2010. Additionally, there were several short films about the Shrek family and two Puss in Boots movies.
The new Donkey film, set to premiere in the near future, is expected to appeal to both children and adults with its mix of humor and heart.
