In Indonesia, black flags with a skull image from the Japanese anime "One Piece" have become a symbol of protest against the government. They are being displayed on doors, cars, and walls in the capital Jakarta and other cities.
Many are raising these flags in response to President Prabowo Subianto’s call to display the red-and-white national flag on August 17 – Independence Day. Critics accuse Prabowo’s government of growing authoritarianism and restricting freedoms.
Fans of "One Piece" call the flag a “symbol of freedom and justice.” However, officials have described the movement as “dividing the nation,” and some lawmakers have even labeled it “treason.” Nonetheless, the president’s administration acknowledged the flag as “creative expression,” asking only that it not be placed next to the national flag.
Experts interpret this symbolic act as a form of peaceful protest. It is noted that political awareness is rising through popular culture like "One Piece."
