Trump raises tariffs on Chinese goods to 20%
U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to increase tariffs on Chinese imports to 20% in response to China’s failure to curb the influx of fentanyl into the U.S.

On March 3, 2025, Trump signed the "Further Amendment to Duties Addressing the Synthetic Opioid Supply Chain in the People’s Republic of China" executive order. The order is based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, National Emergencies Act, and Trade Act of 1974.

This order modifies Executive Order 14195, signed on February 1, 2025, which stated that China’s lack of control over synthetic opioid trafficking posed a threat to U.S. national security.

Trump invoked his authority under Section 1702(a)(1)(B) of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, leading to a tariff increase from 10% to 20%.
