Five EU member states proposed introducing a tax on energy companies

A number of EU countries have initiated the introduction of a new tax on energy companies. According to Reuters, the finance ministers of Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Austria put forward a common position on this issue.
They emphasize that against the backdrop of a sharp increase in fuel prices on the world market, energy companies are making a large profit. Therefore, it is noted that it is necessary to use this excess profit for the benefit of society.
"High-income energy companies should contribute to reducing the negative impact of price increases on the population," the ministers' appeal says.
So far, the proposed tax rate is not clearly defined. This initiative is expected to be reviewed by the European Commission.
