Did you know that the data on the benefits of 10,000 steps a day is not a medical norm, but a marketing ploy?
In 1965, after the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Yamasa Corporation released a pedometer called Manpo-kei. The slogan "Let's walk 10,000 steps a day" was an ideal marketing ploy, because the hieroglyph man (万), meaning 10,000, visually resembles a walking man.
Scientists obtained this number based on a study. It involved overweight Japanese people who walked from 3 to 5 thousand steps daily. A scientist from the University of Tokyo, Yoshiro Hatano, came to the conclusion that increasing the number of steps to 10,000 will lead to a deficit of 300-400 calories.
And this will help reduce weight and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, there is no reason to take exactly this number of steps per day. Most doctors recommend taking at least 6,000-8,000 steps per day. And the World Health Organization simply recommends doing moderate aerobic activity for 150-300 minutes per week.
