Scientists from the University of Edinburgh have discovered that memory loss and confusion in cats are very similar to Alzheimer’s disease in humans. They say this finding could help develop new treatments in the future.
The study examined the brains of 25 cats showing signs of memory impairment — confusion, sleep disturbances, and increased vocalisation. The results revealed a buildup of a harmful protein called amyloid-beta in brain cells. This substance is also found in Alzheimer’s disease.
In addition, cats showed a loss of connections between brain cells and shrinkage of brain tissue. According to the researchers, this leads to a decline in memory and thinking ability.
Experts emphasised that because cats naturally develop this disease, they can be used as a more accurate model for studying the human condition.
The study was published in the European Journal of Neuroscience, and scientists say the discovery could improve the quality of life for both humans and cats.
