The creature that kills over 700,000 people a year has been identified

Predators like lions, tigers, and bears may seem dangerous. But they are not the creatures that cause the most harm to human life. The creature responsible for the deaths of over 700,000 people worldwide each year is the mosquito. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has labeled it the "world's deadliest creature."

You don't have to go into the wild to encounter mosquitoes. They are widespread in human-inhabited areas as well. Despite their small size and a lifespan of only two to three weeks, mosquitoes can transmit various dangerous diseases through blood-feeding.

One of the most dangerous diseases they spread is malaria. This parasite-borne disease claims the lives of over 600,000 people annually. Young children in sub-Saharan Africa are particularly affected.

Although malaria was eliminated in the U.S. in the early 1950s, 10 locally acquired cases were identified in Florida, Texas, Maryland, and Arkansas in 2023.

Mosquitoes also spread dengue fever. Approximately 400 million people worldwide contract the dengue virus each year, with nearly 100 million developing symptoms and about 21,000 dying. In the U.S., reported dengue cases in 2024 were 359 percent higher than the annual average from 2010–2023.

Another dangerous disease is West Nile virus. Local cases of this disease in the U.S. have reached their highest level in the last 22 years. The virus often presents as asymptomatic or with flu-like symptoms, but in some cases, it can become life-threatening. More than 130 people die from it in the U.S. each year.

In some parts of the world, mosquitoes also spread yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis. According to the World Health Organization, yellow fever causes up to 82,000 deaths annually. Japanese encephalitis can lead to death in severe cases and leave survivors with permanent neurological problems.

At the same time, effective and safe vaccines are available for some of these diseases.
